Today, news broke about the approval of a new agreement prioritizing the use of minority, women and locally-owned businesses for a major school renovation project led by the Joint Schools Construction Board in the city of Syracuse. This presents exciting prospects and signals that new opportunities may be on the horizon. It also prompts all entrepreneurs looking for new business to ensure that when new avenues open up, we're prepared to take advantage of them. As Victoria Coit, Co Founder of CuseCulture Magazine, asked in sharing this morning: MBEs/MWBEs, are you ready?
One local entrepreneur actively #PromotingGood finds this question central to the work of his newly established company: Diversify NY, LLC.
Rickey Brown, founder of the company, launched it last year to become a regionally based, multidisciplinary consulting firm that develops, trains, and certifies Minority and Woman-Owned Business Enterprises. Today, it offers certification assistance, develops capacity, and helps clients compete for corporate business. Rickey's mission? To change the culture of how business is done.
"We want to be a resource to both, business vendors and buyers, and in so doing, help to eliminate barriers that often stand in the way of minority led firms," he says.
"We aren’t here to just help organizations meet their diversity goals. We’re here to eliminate the need to have them in the first place."
That alone seems like great headway in #PromotingGood,
but there's more. Rickey's passionate about identifying, creating and promoting
opportunities, and throughout the past decade, he's offered time and/or donated to organizations like the Dunbar Association, Jubilee Homes, TNT, UJTF, NYCLU, SHA, and others. He's also offered countless housing workshops and invested energy into several foreclosure prevention efforts in CNY.
This fall, Rickey is lined up to teach one of several "Start It!" classes to be offered in Syracuse in the coming months. The "Start It!" classes are being organized by Up Start, a new collaborative business development program of CenterState CEO that connects entrepreneurs to resources, tools, and networks to help them thrive.
For his personal and professional drive to #PromoteGood, we're proud to feature Rickey Brown in today's #ThoughtfulThursday entry!
