Working as a Visual Communications & New Technology Intern for Bérica Agency taught me a lot. Most of all, it taught me about the importance of branding.
I just completed my summer internship with Bérica Agency, which I secured through the Vision Center's Synergy Program. Our program director, Natividad Cabrera, connected me to the company so that I could gain the experience of working in a new business environment, and so that I could learn about the process of launching new ventures. My goal is to become a business owner and music producer within the next ten years.
Before this internship, I never knew how closely one needs to look after their brand, and how doing so can really influence your success. Creating and maintaining a positive image for yourself and for your company is not an easy task, but it can open up many opportunities. It can help you gain a social media following, get access to new networking opportunities, build a national fanbase, and more. While working with Bérica Agency, I learned how strong communications can really affect your growth.
I also learned how to create graphics for social media marketing and how to use social media management tools to coordinate posting and cross posting. This is a skill that I will continue to use to help me build my own personal brand. Bérica shares marketing and branding news and tips on Facebook and Twitter, and this summer I created a resource bank to support this project. While conducting the research, I was able to actually read the articles, and I learned a lot about different branding strategies that have been successful. I also learned how to look for local and national resources that can help entrepreneurs grow and expand their businesses—another skill I'm happy to have gained.
For this internship, I had the flexibility to work remotely. People may think that this is an easy thing to do, but it takes a lot of professionalism, dedication, and discipline to work consistently with that much independence. I was always able to complete my work on time, but I learned that it takes a special kind of effort to work without a typical 9am-5pm structure.
On a weekly basis, I would meet up with my boss, Berenice Bonilla, to discuss my work and talk about how everything was going. We would also check in over the phone and online. Berenice took the time to ensure that I was learning and enjoying the experience, which was very helpful. As a future CEO, I know that this is the level of responsibility and dedication that I need to continue to develop if I want to run a business as successful as Bérica.
Overall, this summer internship was amazing, and I would love to be able to work with Bérica Agency again. I could really go on and on about the skills I developed and the things that I learned, but for now, I'll just say that it's a great company to intern for and encourage you to look into working with them!
